MARIA SONNENBERG FOR FLORIDA TODAY
Shirley Jaffe doesn’t work for a funeral home. Nor does she work for a cemetery.
Yet, almost every Tuesday, Jaffe will be attending a funeral, even though she doesn’t know the deceased.
She is at funerals on Tuesdays because Tuesday is Jaffe’s day to make sure that no veteran is buried alone.
Jaffe is a member of the Cape Canaveral Ladies, which consists of 51 women who travel from their homes in Melbourne, Mims or Merritt Island and anywhere in between to Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Scottsmoor.
“This is where I belong,” said Jaffe to Cozette Merritt, who organized the volunteer organization at the new cemetery.
